Zoot's new drummer forced to sell newspapers to make a living

picture nicked from Channel 4

Following an appearance with the Big Roll Band that was recently shown on Channel 4 TV, guest drummer Richard Desmond managed to secure another gig with Zoot at Ronnie Scott's last month. Also on the bill were Roger Daltrey, Sam Brown and a host of Britain's finest, raising money for children with cancer.

Even though Richard played really well, it turned out that unfortunately there isn't a full-time place for him in the band right at the moment, so he's back doing his paper round - until next time.

There's a full feature in the current issue of OK magazine.

ZOOT CAUGHT HOBNOBBING IN SECRET

Amidst all the excitement and mayhem of a national tour, Zoot has recently been hobnobbing in a Big Way, having been appointed musical director for a secret £500-a-ticket charity bash at Ronnie Scotts last month.

Now the cat's out of the bag and pictures of Zoot and fellow performers including Roger Daltrey, Gary Moore, Gary Brooker, Sam Brown and Zoot's regular guest drummer (see left) are splashed all over the latest issue of OK Magazine.

Fortunately loads of money was raised by the event to help children with cancer.

BACK TO THE USUAL SURPRISES

The British Legends tour is over (see below) and the beat goes on for Zoot with a bunch of gigs coming up over the next few weeks. Check out the gigs page for more details (duh!).

As well as all the usual malarkey of Zoot's Surprise Parties at the Bull's Head in Barnes, West London, there are solo shows, Big Roll Band shows and a couple of appearances around the Twickers environs with the massive talent that is Papa George. Not to be confused with George, but definitely to be enjoyed with him. Stereo Georges - what a thought!!

December sees Zoot headlining with the Big Roll Band at Croydon's Cartoon Club. He's eagerly agreed to do the gig because he's been reliably informed Homer Simpson and Eric Cartman hang out there.

BRITLEGS - THE FINAL WORD

British Legends of Rhythm and Blues UK Tour
Guildford Civic Centre 13 October 2003

After six weeks touring the length and breadth of Britain, the tour finally reached leafy Surrey on October 13.

To a student of social anthropology, the audience, gathering in the bar of Guildford Civic Centre before the show, would have provided fascinating research material. Could these respectable, and largely grey-haired (if they were lucky) folk be the mods of forty years ago who used to roar up the A3 to London on their Vespas, and loon it up at the Flamingo Club until dawn? Or had they always been as respectable as their current appearance implied, and just turned up to hear Long John Baldry sing “Mexico”? It was impossible to tell, though those few brave souls who had lit up cigarettes were probably sending out subliminal messages that they belonged to the former camp.
